Why Change Is
Necessary.

Around the world, nearly 2.8 billion people still rely on outdated and unsafe cooking methods such as open fires and traditional charcoal stoves and the majority of Rwandan households are no exception. These practices are not only inefficient but also highly polluting, contributing to severe health and environmental consequences. In Rwanda, traditional cooking accounts for nearly 40% of the country’s air pollution and causes more than 7,000 premature deaths each year due to toxic smoke exposure. Globally, the use of biomass fuels contributes up to 2.3% of all carbon dioxide emissions and over half of the world’s black carbon, a major driver of climate change. Despite the clear risks, many families continue using these harmful fuels due to a lack of clean, accessible, and affordable alternatives. This challenge represents a critical barrier to health, sustainability, and economic progress and it’s one that urgently demands innovative, scalable solutions.
